ZELLIJ-
these artful mosaic tiles, are far more than just a decorative element in architecture of the golden age. Their geometric patterns, often so complex and symmetrical as to be almost hypnotic, carry a deep symbolic meaning of the perfection of the creation; and the seeking of harmony in this world.
Geometric Perfection and Divine Unit
The precise, repeating forms of zellij reflect the idea of a perfect, divine order in the world. Every line, every angle is carefully calculated and contributes to the overall harmony. In Islamic cosmology, geometry represents the unity of God and the order of creation.
In our exhibition this geometric form stands for the circle, that tries to bring the monologues on eight light pillars together. Seeking harmony in confronting the room with the sound waves. The geometric form of the audio and light installation creates a vortex in the center of the zellij.
Monologes under different circumstances
In the middle of the room, the Zallij forms a center for the light and audio installation in English, German, Hebrew and Arabic.
Eight boxes on light pillars in the shape of a zellij, corresponding to the geometric shape of the eight-pointed star, refer to a striving for harmony in creation.
The audio installation creates a sound resonance space in the exhibition that generates two sound worlds. In the center of the zellij, the momologues collide and create a vortex of a common sound and language.
Spread in Andalusia, Morocco, and Beyond
The spread of zellij is a testament to the cultural exchange and artistic diversity in the Islamic world. In Andalusia, Morocco, and many other regions, one can find impressive examples of this art form. They adorn palaces, mosques, fountains, and private homes.
The Dome of the Rock and Other Structures
The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, one of the holiest sites in Islam and Judaism is an outstanding example of the use of geometric patterns. The intricate inlays and mosaics that adorn the interior of the dome are intended to reflect the divine order. Similar patterns can also be found in other significant Islamic buildings such as the Alhambra in Granada or the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakesh.
